New York Camogie Tournament – Belgium GAA crowned champions

posted on October 7th, 2011

Players from our current European County Camogie champions Belgium GAA recently entered an international camogie tournament in the US and won it. This is a great achievement for a European Camogie side to share with you and shows that the hard work in increasing standards in all of our European Camogie clubs means that we are hopefully up there with the best in overseas units!
Report from Laura Whiskerd (Belgium GAA)

As you are probably aware 5 of us from the Belgium GAA camogie team travelled to New York last week to compete in the international camogie tournament which took place in the grounds of Rockland GAA club on Sat 1st October. The Belgium girls teamed up with an ex player of ours who now lives in New Jersey and with the help of a player from Washington DC (she just moved to NY), a player from NY and a player from Toronto, we went on to win the tournament, beating a v tough Boston team in the final. We were two points down at half time and came back to win 4-5 to 1-7.

The next day we played a display game in Gaelic Park where I was presented with the trophy as captain of the team which was a great honour. I was even interviewed for a dvd which they are making about gaelic sports in the US.
